hannan learn to use calculator and How to calculate square roots without a calculator

hannan learn to use calculator

to do math homework for key stage 3

using the one on the computer

just realize no square root.. so have to use another alternative

but then today just realize there is a lot of calculator online

source

Many mathematical operations have an inverse, or opposite, operation. Subtraction is the opposite of addition, division is the inverse of multiplication, and so on. Squaring, which we learned about in a previous lesson (exponents), has an inverse too, called "finding the square root." Remember, the square of a number is that number times itself. The perfect squares are the squares of the whole numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100 …

The square root of a number, n, written

is the number that gives n when multiplied by itself. For example,

because 10 x 10 = 100

Examples

Here are the square roots of all the perfect squares from 1 to 100.

Finding square roots of of numbers that aren't perfect squares without a calculator

1. Estimate - first, get as close as you can by finding two perfect square roots your number is between.

2. Divide - divide your number by one of those square roots.

3. Average - take the average of the result of step 2 and the root.

4. Use the result of step 3 to repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have a number that is accurate enough for you.

Example: Calculate the square root of 10 () to 2 decimal places.

1. Find the two perfect square numbers it lies between.

Solution:
32 = 9 and 42 = 16, so lies between 3 and 4.

2. Divide 10 by 3. 10/3 = 3.33 (you can round off your answer)

3. Average 3.33 and 3. (3.33 + 3)/2 = 3.1667

Repeat step 2: 10/3.1667 = 3.1579
Repeat step 3: Average 3.1579 and 3.1667. (3.1579 + 3.1667)/2 = 3.1623

Try the answer --> Is 3.1623 squared equal to 10? 3.1623 x 3.1623 = 10.0001

If this is accurate enough for you, you can stop! Otherwise, you can repeat steps 2 and 3.

Note: There are a number of ways to calculate square roots without a calculator. This is only one of them.

Malcom Gladwell suggests "10,000 hours"

http://dyslexicprofessor.blogspot.com/

Public speaking demands repetition! In public speaking your whole body and mind are your tool. Just like an athlete has to commit to repetitive physical actions to excel with her/his sport of choice, or a musician spends hours learning to work with their instrument or voice, a public speaker works with his/her tools. A competitive public speakers, in order to be successful, must with great repetition work with her/his body, voice, and mind. Practice, practice, practice! The best selling author, Malcom Gladwell suggests "10,000 hours" (see: http://www.gladwell.com/outliers/index.html ) if you want to be great at something. I AGREE! When you are done practicing...practice some more. I now tell my students, perfect practice makes perfect performances. It is the repetition, specifically the practice of memorization that made me realize how truly powerful the human brain is. In college Forensics, in order for students who are participating for truly competitive programs (like the LAVC Speech Team), students are required to have 4-5 competitive speeches ready for the national tournament held annually in April. This means that any student who is doing platform speeches (prepared speeches) must write, research and memorize 4-5 different speeches. Not only does this require a GREAT amount of initial time dedicated to mental repetition, but following each preliminary speech competition prior to the national competition (most teams will go to 8-12 different competitions Sept-March) the successful students are constantly applying the criticisms given to them from judges at each competition. Successful competitors are constantly editing, and often rewriting their speeches and re-memorizing between each preliminary competition. So, not only does the competitive speaker practice with great repetition the performative aspects required for public speaking, but also she/he is constantly writing. As a dyslexic, who failed the first grade because I could not read; who failed English in the 11th grade because I could not write; and who at the community college had to take English 21, before being permitted to take any college level English courses after being called "retarded" by a college professor -- I am confident when I say "it was the four years of intense repetition being practiced with my whole body and mind that helped me to learn to not just negotiate my dyslexia, but to also get creative with my own learning style and discover solvency for my problems associated with dyslexia." Thank you Marty!

What is the shape of a trapezium?

What is the shape of a trapezium?

It's a quadrilateral (4 sides) and it has two sides that are parallel. If you draw a triangle and cut off one corner, you'll have two figures. One is a triangle, and the other, the 4-sided one, will be a trapezium.

Trapeziums (or Trapezoids)
These shapes have only one pair of parallel sides. It doesn't have to have any two sides the same length, and, although it is possible to draw a parallelogram which has its diagonals crossing at right angles, generally speaking, they don't.

A parallelogram is a particular sort of trapezium where there are two pairs of parallel sides instead of just one. Similarly, a rhombus is a particular sort of parallelogram, and a rectangle is another particular sort of parallelogram. A square is a particular sort of rectangle and, at the same time, a particular sort of rhombus. This is summarised in the following Venn diagram:

T = Set of all trapeziums
P = Set of all parallelograms
Re = Set of all rectangles
Rh = Set of all rhombuses
S = Set of all squares

2020 Children and Young People's Workforce Strategy.

source

http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/everychildmatters/strategy/childrenandyoungpeoplesworkforce/workforcestrategy/

In December 2008 the Government published the 2020 Children and Young People's Workforce Strategy. This sets out the Government's vision that everyone who works with children and young people should be:

* ambitious for every child and young person
* excellent in their practice
* committed to partnership and integrated working
* respected and valued as professionals.

Whatever their role, the aim is to ensure that members of the workforce have the skills and knowledge to do the best job they possibly can to help children and young people develop and succeed across all the outcomes which underpin Every Child Matters: being safe, staying healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being.

The strategy sets out how the Government will work with partners, and people in the workforce, to ensure that every part of the children and young people's workforce achieves this vision.

The development of the strategy has been supported by an Expert Group of professionals and leaders from different parts of the children and young people's workforce, which has had a major influence on both the overall direction and detail of the strategy. The strategy is also a result of collaboration with key Government departments with responsibility for improving services for children and young people, including the Department of Health, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice.

Getting started with the 11 Plus Exam

Getting started with the 11 Plus Exam

Where to Start

Don’t panic! Although the whole process can seem like a test for the parents it can be straightforward. It's an unfortunate fact of life that there are more children hoping to get into a grammar school than there are places available. Firstly, do your homework!

Parents Homework
Your local educational authority will be able to give you a list of selective schools in your area. We have links from our site to your LEA. Request prospectuses, make visits (schools hold impressive open days but personal visits can sometimes give you a better insight to the true day to day running), talk to both teachers, pupils and other parents and you should get a ‘gut’ feeling for a school that might suit the individual needs of your child.
Areas to focus on are: support and guidance for pupils' welfare, quality of teaching, attitudes and behaviour, leadership, staffing and resources, attainment and progress, links with the wider community, activities beyond the school day, etc.

For the exam, most schools will also tell you what subjects to focus on, whether they are multiple choice or standard type questions. They may even have past papers you can get familiar with. Do not rely on the school your child is currently at for answers to your questions, primary schools tend to keep a very low profile when it comes to grammar schools and in our experience scant information is available. YOU have to put the legwork in and do the research.

Ensure you start early, it's no good leaving this essential research until a few weeks before the exam, start early, stay focused and have your child start preparing for the different subjects relevant to your school of choice. Not all schools do all subjects, some only do Verbal Reasoning, some do Maths & Verbal Reasoning others different combinations. If you have spoken to the school you will know which areas to focus on.

Information can be found about league table positions on BBC and the Times websites and standards from OFSTED reports.

Grammar school places will be more oversubscribed than usual thanks to the credit crunch. It seems that parents who are struggling with school fees are looking to Grammar schools. And why not? They are some of the best performing schools in the country.

Many grammar schools are reporting huge rises in the number of applications. Unfortunately the number of places available will stay the same so competition will be extra tough.

What this boils down to is the simple fact that only the children that have revised and prepared will get through which is why it is so important for parents to do their homework and prepare as well. It’s no good swotting up a week or 2 before the exam; you need to have a plan in place at least 6 months if not a year in place where you can pace your child through the different online tests and paper tests available. It is a one off opportunity so get it right.

The message is simple – If you fail to plan you are planning to fail.
