What is a fraction?

What is a fraction?

This pizza has been cut into three equal parts. We call these thirds. A third is written as 1/3.

The whole pizza cut into three equal parts gives us three thirds. Think about just one slice. We can write this using a fraction 1/3.

You might see fractions in shops, on bills, in newspapers and recipes. It's a good idea to recognise fractions when they are written as words.

fraction word plural
One half (A half) halves
One third thirds
One quarter quarters
One fifth fifths
One sixth sixths
One seventh sevenths
One eighth eighths
One ninth ninths
One tenth tenths
It's easy really to make the words, apart from the first four. All the other fractions are like the numbers but with a 'th' sound added at the end.

Even easier is making the plurals, as long as you are careful with the plural of .
Just put an 's' on the end of the other fractions.

words figures words figures
one quarter 1/4 three quarters 3/4
two fifths 2/5 three eighths 3/8
four fifths 4/5 two thirds 2/3
