• Explain original features of text including alphabetical order, layout, diagrams, captions, hyperlinks and bullet points.
• Research a given topic using a library.
• Choose a selection of library books on a given topic and then select most appropriate books.
• Collect several books on a similar theme – life cycles / traditional tales etc.
• Discuss and investigate text layout.

KNOWLEDGE OF WORDS AND SENTENCES

• Explore how particular words are used including words and expressions with similar meanings.
• Infer the meaning of unknown words from context.
• Identify synonyms in texts and generate related words.
• Recognise and take account of speech marks when reading.
• Break down and read longer words independently with minimal support.
• Use a range of strategies to decode unfamiliar words
• Decode an unfamiliar multi - syllabic word using breakdown into syllables and all phoneme, grapheme correspondences.
• Identify and discuss new words in text.

KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TEXT WORKS
As for gold band plus below
• Track a character’s development in a story.
• Speak with clarity and appropriate intonation when requested to read aloud.
• Describe a character from a book including relevant detail and personal observations.
• Say how different story settings influence events and behaviour.
• Pose questions prior to reading non fiction texts and then find answers in the text.
• Scan a text to find specific sections.
• Expect text to make sense and self correct to retain meaning.
• Notice and respond to humorous elements of a text.

EVIDENCE OF EMBEDDED SKILLS/LEARNING (outside Guided Reading Session)
As for gold band plus below
• Navigate through a series of web pages making use of hyperlinks.
• Read whole books independently choosing and justifying selections.
• Elements of books read are evident in independent writing.
• Show preference for certain types of reading material and actively search these out.
• Read silently most of the time.
